Straying off course.

Unplain sailing.

It came to me untitled; I call it Gazing.

An original charcoal drawing from the studio of Maurice Colasson (1911–1992), the French production designer and art director who trained at the École des Beaux-Arts before working on films including Mayerling and La Reine Margot.

Painting and drawing were a private practice alongside his film career — reserved by nature, he rarely if ever exhibited, and work from his studio is typically identified by the "Atelier Maurice Colasson" stamp rather than a signature, as seen here.

Charcoal on paper. Built through directional hatching and tonal smudging rather than outline — the same hazy, atmospheric quality that runs through his abstract landscape work.

It came to me from a specialist dealer in Colasson's studio material in France, with no further ownership history beyond that; the attribution rests on the atelier stamp, as it does across the wider Colasson market.

In good condition with some very minor discolouration to the edges of the paper.

The sheet measures 42cm wide x 29cm tall. It's unmounted and unframed.
